Route Guide: Besseggen Ridge
Trail Report — Published March 07, 2024
The Besseggen ridge traverse remains one of Norway's most popular day hikes. Starting from Memurubu (reached by ferry from Gjendesheim), the route covers 15 km with approximately 1,100 m of total elevation change.
The ridge section between Bessvatnet and Gjende is exposed and requires careful footing — proper hiking boots with ankle support are essential. The Glacier Waterproof Boots provided excellent grip on the polished rock.
Peak season (July–August) sees 300+ hikers per day. For a quieter experience, go in early June or late September. The DNT cabin at Gjendesheim serves warm meals and has basic dormitory accommodation.
